located. There has been news that the Nigerian army will establish more
barracks to accommodate the population of its ever increasing officers. Nigerian Army barracks are strategic locations
where of officers of the military
service live. These barracks are found in almost all states and geopolitical
zones of the country. And while they are home to mainly military of officers and their family
members, some civilians also live there for one reason or another. Also, during
times of security crises in the country, these heavily guarded barracks turn to
be a “safe haven” for people whose lives are in danger.
Across
the 36 states of the federation, Nigeria has about 52 army barracks, with the
southwestern geopolitical zone having the highest number of these military
bases with 17 barracks, while the southeast has the least number of barracks
with about 4 military barracks.
In
between these two extremes, there are also barracks in other geopolitical
zones.
History of Army Barracks in Nigeria
Formed
after the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) left, it was the British
that trained troops of the army who fought during the East African Campaign
(World War II). This was the first time these officers tasted war and was an
advantage to use as a yard stick to train future soldiers. It was after the
Nigerian civil war ended in 1970 that the population of the Nigerian army rose
to 126,000 with the combination of officers from three divisions and 18,000
infantry battalions. The Nigerian army was tasked to ensure that a repeat of
the bloodied war against internal and external threat was defeated at all cost.
Colonel
Olusegun Obasanjo, who recognized his command, 3rd Division during the period
of civil unrest was key in making sure that logistics and administration were
greatly improved. The defense budget was increased and it was due to this that
the Nigerian army recorded victory over Biafran forces, even though the NA
lacked good arms and had less bases to keep and train soldiers.
By
the time the civil war ended, there were four divisions recognized to control
territories in the various regions from the North to South. 1 Division has its
headquarters in Kaduna to oversee the North West sector; 2 Division
headquarters was at Ibadan took charge of South West; 3rd Division with HQ at
Jos oversaw the North East sector while 82 Division with its HQ at Enugu took
charge of the South East sector.
Today,
with a more robust funding and organization by the Federal Government, the
Headquarters of the Nigerian army has now seen various army barracks and
formations that will oversee the day to day upkeep of the welfare, physical
training, public relations, etc of its officers to go in line with the military
ordinances. Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) which is located in Minna is
responsible for the training and combat development of officers in the Nigerian
army.
As
an organized branch of the armed forces, the Nigerian army also has engineers,
musicians, teachers, and other skilled workers. There is also the presence of
the military police (MP) and 17 Corps Training Schools. According to Wikipedia,
the current population of the Nigerian army is estimated at 6,000 officers and
over 150,000 soldiers.

Structure of the Nigeria Army Barracks
The
Nigeria Army barracks are built and structured to house military personnel and
their families. They’re built mainly to separate militants from the civilian
population. The purpose is to reinforce discipline, training, and esprit de
corps referred to as “disciplined factories for soldiers.” Officers in the barracks are
usually charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the barracks and
personnel are in an orderly fashion. At the same time, junior Officers are charged with
maintaining cleanliness in the barracks. The Nigeria Army barracks consists of
military Officers
and soldiers from different ethnic groups, linguistics, and cultural
background. Officers
live with their families, relatives, and/or civilians as the case may be
because civilians seek shelter in times of security crisis. Interestingly
enough, you may want to know that the Nigerian army barracks are made up of
different parts.
They
include the following;
Officers’ Quarters
A
billet is a living-quarter where soldiers are assigned to sleep. In the past,
it used to be a private dwelling place for the soldiers to accept. In Nigeria
today, we have different quarters built around the barracks to accommodate of Officers and their families.
The senior of Officers
of the Nigerian Army live in the Officers’ quarters. Each of Officers is assigned a room with a soldier subordinate or
orderly. The commanding soldiers live in bigger and well-spaced houses than
other subordinates. Also, the ranks of the of Officers determine what accommodation to live in. Privates
and corporals live in their ranks’ quarters, while the sergeants’ quarters are
mainly for non-commissioned of Officers.
Shopping Centre
The
Nigerian Army barracks are now beautified with shopping centers, also known as commissary
facilities like before. An example is ‘The arena,’ located in Oshodi, Lagos
State. The shopping centers operate like conventional marts and are being run
by wives of the army of officers
living in the barracks. They sell items like foodstuff, provisions, and every
other valuable needed by dwellers at discounted prices.
Military Prisons
In
the Nigeria Army barracks, there’re correctional centers, also known as
military prisons. You can imagine what it’ll be like having a prison in a
military environment. The atmosphere is really not going to be a palatable one
for the offender. The prisons are set up to instill order and sanity into
anyone who trespasses. The trespasser can be an army officer who commits a punishable
offense, an enemy of the country, or a prisoner during the war. The Nigeria
military sees to the affairs of the military prison,
Army Mess
The
Nigerian militants also set out time to rest and relax. Time to flex around,
chat, eat, drink, and relate like a civilian, not having to be in a combat
mood. This is what is referred to as ‘Army mess.’ A number of the Nigerian army
barracks have a mess, where they enjoy relaxation while off-duty. An example is
the Command Of officers
Mess at Asokoro in Abuja, FCT.
Military Hospital
The
Nigeria Army barracks also operate their own hospital to cater to the health
challenges of the military of officers
and their families. It is either located inside or close to the barracks. This
opportunity is also extended to civilians that need medical attention. Examples
of the Nigerian army hospitals include; Army Command and NAOWA Hospital, Abuja,
Nigerian Army Military Hospital, Lagos, etc.
Challenges of Nigerian military
Aside
the popular lack of upgraded weapons in the Nigerian military to fight external
forces, soldiers often complain of lack of suitable bases to live in. Most of
these army barracks are old and dilapidated weak structures are noticeable in
these barracks.
In conclusion, the Nigeria Army barracks are not well-taken care of by the governments. With dilapidated buildings and structures, the deplorable state of the barracks calls for serious concern from the government, as this shouldn’t be the condition of those defending and protecting her territories.
