It was once a place for pioneer explorers who set out to explore unknown lands. Today, it is home to many travelers from all over the world looking for high quality, easy living and lots of sunshine.
It's easy to see why Portugal, and
its capital Lisbon, is popular with international citizens. If you are planning
to move your family to Lisbon, you will need an international school for your
children.
Let
us tell you everything you need to know! The Portuguese school system has four
levels; Basic education system (Ensino Basico) 1, 2 and 3 from 6 to 10 years
(cycle 1), from 10 to 13 years (cycle 2) and from 13 to 15 years (cycle 3).
Then,
secondary education (Ensino Secundario) comes from 15 to 18 years. Ensino
Basico is mandatory, but Ensino Secundario is optional. Many international
schools in Lisbon accept children according to these ages and backgrounds. They
can offer courses only for Ensino Basico, only for some cycles, only for Ensino
Secundario, or for all cycles.
The
school year follows a similar pattern in most of Europe. It starts in September
and ends in June, with breaks for the Christmas and Easter holidays. The school
day starts around 8:30am to 4pm, although this varies from school to school.
Typically, applications open at the end of each school year for children who
will start school the following year in September.
However, due to increased demand, many international schools now accept applications every year. As in many European countries, the standard of education in international schools in Lisbon is very high.
All the usual benefits like after
school programs, small classes, native speaking teachers, and many activities
are offered here.
When
it comes to tuition fees, despite the high quality, Portuguese international
schools are the cheapest in Europe. If you want to enjoy the benefits of expat
life in a major European city like Rome, Brussels or Paris, but without such
financial impact, then Lisbon is the right choice. Like other southern European
countries, Portugal has a long tradition of Catholic schools.
The
same can be said for Lisbon's international schools, many of which follow Catholic
or Christian principles. This does not mean that you have to follow the
Christian faith for your child to attend - it plays a role in the way they go
to school.
There
is a large selection of international schools in Lisbon and its suburbs. But
there are other schools that are easy to reach, especially around Cassias and a
little further up the hill towards Sintra. Non-capital international schools
offer travel services.
Lisbon
is an empty place to live, but it is still a big and busy city. If you'd rather
be away from the hustle and bustle, it's worth looking at other things nearby.
